What is GDPR?

GDPR stands for General Data Protection Regulations. It has been designed to provide greater protection for personal data in our digital world.

GDPR comes into force on 25 May 2018. It regulates all handling and storing of personal data, being:

  • Name
  • Photo
  • Email address
  • Bank details
  • Posts on social networking sites
  • Medical information
  • Computer IP address

Even data that has been ‘pseudonymised’ is subject to GDPR.

GDPR will change marketing

GDPR will change the way we used to practice marketing. It feels like a threat, but it shouldn’t. GDPR can also be an opportunity to raise the standard on quality engagement. It can be an opportunity to truly connect with people who are interested in your offer.

Is GDPR also applicable in B2B marketing?

If you collect data, you have to be GDPR compliant. Even if you don’t collect the data yourself, but you have forms online, use Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter or other social media. Even the data of your employees are subject to GDPR. This means almost every company has to be GDPR compliant.

The difference between B2B and B2C lies in the fact that some enterprise-level data governance and security demands are not applicable to a B2B company. Think of the requirement to appoint a Data Protection Officer. This makes it easier for B2B companies, but the risk remains. And unfortunately, we see that too many B2B marketers take the backseat of GDPR preparedness. A Forrester review pointed out that only 20% of B2B marketers are ready to deal with it. Most of them underestimate the impact GDPR can have if they are not complient.

GDPR is a shared responsibility

GDPR compliance is a shared responsibility that isn’t specific to security, marketing, or IT. The legal basis is complicated and depending on what kind of data you handle. As such a third party, e.g. a web designer cannot be held responsible for GDPR compliance of his customers. The responsibility lies within the company that handles the data.
